Sketches (Apparel Ideation)
As of 2021, I have been ideating digitally using a tablet. I want to move in this direction for more efficiency as well as to better convey texture, color, etc. The sketches above are one of my first attempts at representing apparel designs this way. For this collection, I focused on simple silhouettes with a greater emphasis on surface detail because I am working out of a home studio and feel I can pattern these pieces myself. I also taught myself to embroider during quarantine and want to utilize this!
I typically began brainstorming with the 100:10:1 method in mind. This was taught to me during my design foundation curriculum at university. I apply this to fashion by starting with 100 sketches and narrowing them down to the top fifteen designs, and then the final 6 from there. After that, they will move into production. The sketches above are a few pages scanned from my physical sketchbook that I was using when ideating “LAVABLE”.
